High-Intensity Theatre (HIT) Lists involve careful selection of appropriate patients, operations, teams and locations, and standardising care before, during and after surgery. After meticulous multidisciplinary, multispeciality planning of operating lists, we can perform overlapping surgery using a ‘parallel processing’ model. In a traditional ‘serial processing’ model of surgery, a single operating theatre is used, and the anaesthetic and surgical care of each patient only begins when the previous patient has left the operating theatre. With the HIT List model, we use two operating theatres that run concurrently, and manage different phases of care for multiple patients simultaneously. This parallel processing model significantly improves efficiency and patient outcomes.
